Gata is a beloved Armenian sweet bread with a history that spans centuries. Once baked across a land that stretched from sea to sea, each region gave it its own twist by adding their own flare, primarily with the same ingredients available in those areas (butter, flour, sugar... and sometimes walnuts). At its heart, it has always remained a cherished Armenian treasure. Gata can be shaped as a flat cake or rolled into sweet, layered shortbread-style cookies. The dough is spread thin with a rich filling, then rolled—creating even more delicate layers than a croissant—and served as the perfect companion to tea, coffee or Armenian Brandy.
If you visit Armenia’s Garni Temple (dating back before Jesus) or Geghard Monastery, you’ll find grandmothers along the roadside offering this wonderful treat, baked with the same love as Gata Mama. Just one bite of our gata will transport you straight to Garni or Geghard.
